How a person can avoid unnecessary criticism?

This is a story about patience, calmness, inner peace and how a person can avoid unnecessary criticism. With inner peace and calmness, a person can tackle any instability in life.

Once Gautam Buddha was sitting under a tree. Suddenly a furious person came there and starting abusing Gautam Buddha.

How a person can avoid unnecessary criticism

The person expected that Gautam Buddha will also reciprocate in same manner. But to his surprise, Gautam Budda was completely silent and compassionate. Not even a single expression on his face changed. He was completely unmoved by his nonsense and abusive language.

This made that person even more furious. He hurled more and more abuses at Buddha. Still it did not bring any difference in Gautam Buddha’s attitude. He was completely unmoved. There was a look of compassion on his face. Ultimately person was tired of abusing him and gave up.

The person said “I am abusing you like anything, but it does not make any difference to you.

Why are you not angry at all?

Gautam Buddha smiled and replied “My dear brother, I deny to take a single abuse from you. I have not accepted it from you”

The person got confused. He said” But you have listened all of them, did not you?

Gautam Buddha said, “I certainly don’t need these abuses, so why should I listen to them?”

Now the person got even more puzzled. He could not understand what Gautam Buddha was trying to convey. For him, it is totally unexpected behaviors. If someone uses abuses, then definitely the person on other side respond in same manner. But he was completely shocked with Gautam Buddha’s behavior. And then more to it, he is talking something that is completely out of range of his understanding.

Looking at his puzzled expression, Gautam Buddha further explained, “Since I have not accepted it, all these abuses remain with you.

Person said” It is not possible. I have hurled all of them at you,”

Buddha calmly repeated his reply, “But I have not accepted even a single abuse from you. Let me explain you with an example. Suppose you want to give some coins to somebody, and if he does not accept them, with whom will those coins remain? “

The person replied, ” If I have given the coins to a person and he does not need it and does not accept it, then naturally they would remain with me. I cannot force him to accept them”

Now with a meaningful smile on face, Buddha replied, “Now you got it right. The same has happened with all your abuses. You came here and hurled abuses at me, but I denied to accept it. I don’t need it and I have not accepted a single abuse from you. Hence, all those abuses remain with you only. So there is no reason to be angry with you. “

The person became speechless. Now he did not have anything to counter this. He was ashamed of his behavior and he begged for his forgiveness.

Over to You

Patience, Inner calmness and peace are keys to happy and contented life. If you are determined, no one can shatter your peace. Your happiness is in your hand. My advice is simple, live your life with goals and ambition, but inner peace and a content life is equally important. You should know who you are and if someone utter some nonsense at you, you must refuse it to accept. Do not get moved away with anyone’s rude behavior. You yourself is the source of your happiness. And when you tend to be that reservoir of happiness, no one in the world can take away a inch of happiness from you.
